It was an hour or so later that Anthony climbed out of his window. His face was a welt of pain and he could only see out of one eye, but none of that mattered now. Awkwardly, he climbed down the side of the house to the ground. The stables were locked so he had no choice but to walk, or to run.

Anthony ran.

As he ran, he gave no thought to the sounds he could hear out in the night around him, sounds which, if he’d been thinking clearly, would have made him stop and think. There were horns, the howling of dogs and the pounding of hooves. What was the hunt doing out at night?

He didn’t stop to wonder what they were hunting, and even if he had done so it was unlikely that he could have guessed at the monstrous truth.

Having said that, while he paid no mind to the noise, he noticed when it stopped. When it stopped, it seemed as if a black curtain had fallen. The night was not quiet, it was dead. Something had happened.

Making his way through the wood via the shortcut that led to where he and Rosemary had planned to meet, he heard them coming this way, now slow and steady, and now he did wonder. Were they out hunting for him? But why then had they stopped?

Anthony hid himself and watched from the trees as the procession passed. The hunt was somber now. The horses walked with heads low, the dogs slinking around their legs, picking up on the mood, the riders looking almost confused.

But Anthony saw none of it. All he saw was the lead rider, who rode with a body laid across his saddle.
